Job Description

The New Product Development Lead will oversee the development of a fire-rated door and glazing system for export markets, with a particular focus on the American market.

Goal

  • Analysis of the limitations of current fire-resistant door and screen products offered by competing companies. Develop a superior fire-resistant product with a unique selling point eg. Door tested with automatic operators, magnetic locks, and access control as a composite product offering.


Key Responsibilities:

  • New Product Development: Lead the integration of 3D CAD, 3D printing, and CNC technologies into IDS’s production processes to create innovative products in glazing and door systems.
  • Product Design: Supervise the design of door and glazing systems using digital fabrication technologies in compliance with U.S. market specifications. Ensure that designs are optimised for manufacturability, functionality, and performance.
  • Training & Knowledge Transfer: Provide training to the engineering and production teams on new technologies and processes, facilitating the seamless adoption of innovative methods for product development.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Oversee the creation of prototypes using 3D printing and CNC machining to validate new product designs. Ensure that prototypes meet quality and regulatory standards through thorough testing and iteration.
  • Cost Analysis & Optimisation: Conduct cost-benefit analyses for the adoption of new technologies in product development, identifying opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements.
  • Project Management: Manage project timelines to ensure that key milestones are met and that the project stays on track. Collaborate with external partners, including the academic partner (NWRC), to ensure successful project execution.


The successful graduate will lead this project, in a supportive partnership with North West Regional College (NWRC) as part of the InterTradeIreland Innovation Boost Programme and will also have the opportunity to avail of a Post Graduate Diploma with Queen’s University Belfast as part of the employment offering.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience with Digital Fabrication Technologies: Proven knowledge and hands-on experience in the use of 3D CAD, 3D scanning, 3D printing, and CNC manufacturing technologies.
  • Product Development Expertise: Strong background in redesigning and developing new products for manufacturing using advanced digital fabrication processes.
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to lead projects, manage timelines, and ensure successful implementation of new processes, meeting project milestones and deadlines.
  • Training and Knowledge Transfer Experience: Demonstrated experience in training and upskilling teams in new technologies, with a focus on seamless knowledge transfer within production environments
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Ireland/EU; if you do require a visa/work permit allowing you to work in Ireland/EU you must upload a copy of it with your application.

Desirable Criteria

  • Advanced CAD and Engineering Software Skills: Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Fusion 360, as well as 3D scanning and digital prototyping tools.
  • Willingness to explore the Integration of AI into the manufacturing process.
  • Experience in the Manufacturing Sector: Background in manufacturing, especially within sectors that utilise CNC machining, 3D printing, and digital fabrication.
  • Market Experience: Including knowledge of industry regulations (EU, UK, USA), customer preferences, and market trends, particularly in manufacturing or construction sectors. A basic knowledge or level of interest in building regulations, fire regulations and testing, EN1634-1, EN13501-2, BS8214, EN16034, means of escape regulations, panic hardware, self-closing door device technology, disabled access regulations, glass, fire glass, burglar resistance and ballistic resistance of doors and windows, and EN16005, door automation and sensor technology.
  • Familiarity with Compliance Standards: Understanding of certification requirements, such as UL standards, and the ability to adapt products to meet specific market regulatory and quality control expectations
  • Ability to condense and present complex information in a concise format that non-technical personnel and clients can easily understand.
