Job Description
We wish to recruit a Formulation Scientist to lead on a collaboration with Ulster University through the InterTradeIreland Innovation Boost Programme to improve the sustainability of our product range. The post holder will acquire a range of desirable skills that are transferrable to a number of science-based sectors (pharmaceuticals, agri-food, private consultancy) and develop a network of contacts throughout Ireland, the UK and further afield.
The central aim of the project is to develop a range of container eco candles using a novel blend of recycled paraffin wax and plant waxes. The successful candidate will:
- Be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of activities between the business (Torc Candles Ltd., Borris, Co. Carlow) and the knowledge partner (Ulster University, Coleraine, Northern Ireland)
- Undertake bench-scale laboratory work to develop an eco-friendly wax recycling method that is scalable to ca. 10 tonnes/yr
- In consultation with the University, develop a novel wax formulation that is suitable for container candles
- Oversee prototyping of novel eco candles
- Prepare documents (to ISO9001 standard) including standard operating procedures, risk assessments and product summaries
- Take responsibility for knowledge transfer to ensure the long-term viability of the project outputs
Please note this role will involve travel from Borris (Co. Carlow, Republic of Ireland) to Coleraine (Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland) regularly.

this project, in a supportive partnership with Ulster University as part of the InterTradeIreland Innovation Boost Programme and will also have the opportunity to avail of a Post Graduate Diploma with Queen’s University Belfast as part of the employment offering.
